Indian American Couple Makes History as First Sikh Pair to Conquer Mount Everest

Michigan, USA: Ann Arbor, MI, January 8, 2025: Harpreet and Navneet Cheema, a couple from Ann Arbor, Michigan, made history on May 23, 2024, by becoming the first Sikh pair to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Their achievement also marked the inaugural raising of the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag, on the world’s tallest peak.

The couple’s journey to the top of the 8,848.86-meter mountain spanned 43 days, testing their endurance and faith. They faced treacherous ridges and constant danger, yet they persisted with resilience, determination, and love, strengthening their bond along the way.

Upon reaching the summit, the Cheemas recited the Sikh hymn “Gagan Main Thaal” and offered prayers for world peace, equality, and unity. The raising of the Nishan Sahib was a powerful symbol of their devotion to their faith and the spiritual significance of their accomplishment.

Experienced mountaineers, the Cheemas have scaled five of the Seven Summits and regard this expedition as a personal and spiritual victory.
