Sumiti Mehta Makes History as the First Indian-American Woman Elected to the Natomas School Board

Sacramento, USA: Sumiti Mehta has etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian-American woman elected to the Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees in Sacramento, California, on December 13, 2024. This achievement represents a pivotal moment for the Indian-American community in the city. The event was further highlighted by the oath of office administered by State Senator Angelique Ashby, making the occasion all the more special.

Originally from India, Mehta relocated to the United States with her husband in 2007. Since moving to Natomas in 2009, she has played an active role in the community, working closely with the district administration, educators, staff, and parents to advocate for underprivileged students.

Reflecting on her journey, Mehta shared, “As an immigrant, mother, and woman of color, I deeply relate to the struggles of parents who must fiercely advocate for their children. My own evolution from an anxious parent with a strong accent to a recognized youth advocate has shaped my commitment to education.”

Mehta’s extensive involvement in education and public service includes her tenure on the NP3 School Board and as a former City of Sacramento Parks and Recreation Commissioner for Natomas. She also serves on several boards, such as the North Natomas JIBE and the National Women Political Caucus (NWPC-SAC).

Her dedication extends beyond board roles, having contributed to various committees within the Natomas Unified School District, including the Community Engagement Initiative, School Site Council, Parent Advisory Committee, and the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee for Measures J and L.

Mehta has also been a passionate volunteer, tutoring for Reading Partners, participating in ABC 10's Digital Series "Moms Explain All" and "Three Moms and a Dad," and organizing after-school enrichment programs like Art Club, Chess Club, and Handwriting Club.
