5 Essential Maps for Navigating from Logan Airport During Sumner Tunnel Closure

Travelers departing from Boston Logan Airport will need to explore alternative routes due to the month-long closure of the Sumner Tunnel.

The tunnel, undergoing renovations until August 5, usually facilitates traffic under Boston Harbor, linking East Boston and Logan Airport to downtown Boston.

With the tunnel shut, traffic will be redirected, impacting those travelling from Logan Airport or East Boston to the heart of Boston.

The Chelsea Police Department has issued a warning against using Chelsea as a shortcut.

“Chelsea is NOT a cut-through! Expect long delays, angry honks, and possibly a traffic jam that rivals your worst nightmare,” the department posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Save yourself the trouble and find an alternate route!”

Below are 5 maps provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to help navigate the Sumner Tunnel closure and access the airport.

East Boston to Downtown

Drivers from East Boston heading downtown will be rerouted to I-90 via the Ted Williams Tunnel, accessible from Bennington Street, then onto I-93.

Airport to Downtown

Travelers leaving Boston Logan Airport for downtown Boston will be directed to I-90 via the Ted Williams Tunnel, then onto I-93.

Airport to I-93 North

Those aiming for I-93 North from Logan Airport should follow signs for Route 1A North to Bell Circle Rotary, then to Route 16, Route 1 South, over Route 1/Tobin Bridge, and follow signs to Rutherford Avenue, continuing through Sullivan Square to reach I-93 North.

Revere to Downtown

Drivers on Route 1 South heading downtown are advised to divert to Route 1A in Revere at Bell Circle Rotary, then rerouted to I-90 via the Ted Williams Tunnel, and onto I-93.

Route 145 Exit Closure

MassDOT advises that when the Route 145 (Bennington Street) exit is closed, follow the local East Boston detour. Message boards and signs near the Ted Williams Tunnel entrance will guide residents through the route.
