Is the US Cutting H-1B Visa Duration? Key Immigration Reforms Explained

Washington, USA: The US is moving towards major reforms in its immigration policy. Jessica M. Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies proposed key reforms to the US House Committee, which is investigating the issue of 'Restoration of Immigration Enforcement in the United States'. She suggested that the H-1B visas, which are currently issued by experts from other countries to work in US companies with a tenure of three years, should be given only for two years, and if necessary, it should be extended only for a period of four years. It is proposed to do away with the system of automatically extending the H-1B visa on the ground that they have applied for a green card. The number of H-1B visas should also be restricted to 75,000. It is proposed to obtain consent from foreign students coming to the US on student visas (F-1 and M-1) that they will return to their home countries after completing their studies.

Even after the expiry of the deadline, it is in America.

"Many people who come to the US on student and exchange visas are still staying in the UNITED States even after their visas have expired," Vaughan said. In 2023, there were more than 7,000 Indians staying illegally in the US, followed by Brazil, China, and Colombia with more than 2,000.
