Texas Man Passes Away While Hiking at Grand Canyon National Park, Authorities Report

Authorities have reported the death of a Texas man who was hiking in Grand Canyon National Park.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — On Monday, authorities announced the death of a Texas man, Scott Sims, 69, from Austin, who was hiking at Grand Canyon National Park.

Officials mentioned that Sims was attempting to reach Phantom Ranch on Saturday for an overnight stay via the South Kaibab Trail.

Around 7 p.m., park officials received a report about a semi-conscious hiker on the River Trail, located approximately halfway between the Silver Bridge and Black Bridge near Phantom Ranch.

Shortly after the report, the hiker became unresponsive. Bystanders initiated CPR, and three National Park Service paramedics responded from Phantom Ranch. Despite their efforts, Sims could not be resuscitated.

Officials noted that summer temperatures on exposed parts of the trail can soar to over 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) in the shade.

The National Park Service, in collaboration with the Coconino County medical examiner, is conducting an investigation into the death.
