Are India-Canada Relations Falling Into a Similar Trap as Indo-Pakistan?

India-Canada Relations: India's diplomatic ties with Canada have plummeted, with Michael Kugelman, a foreign policy expert, likening the situation to India’s historical issues with Pakistan. He remarked, "One could not have imagined that things in this relationship could get worse, but they have," highlighting the depth of the crisis.

India-Canada Relations Deteriorate, Reflecting Indo-Pakistani Tensions

The current discord mirrors the India-Pakistan dynamic, characterized by severe allegations, mutual expulsions of diplomats, and incendiary rhetoric from both governments. Kugelman noted, "This relationship has now hit rock bottom," with India's accusations that Canada is harboring anti-India terrorists—echoing past claims made about Pakistan.

Internal political dynamics in Canada are contributing to the rift, particularly Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's comments supporting Indian farmers protesting agricultural reforms. Kugelman pointed out that such remarks, which stray into India's domestic affairs, have exacerbated tensions.

While Canada refutes claims of sheltering extremists, India remains adamant in its stance, further complicating relations. Kugelman underscored the significance of this disagreement, noting that it reflects broader issues, including Canada's support for Sikh movements related to India's internal matters.

In a recent escalation, India expelled six Canadian diplomats following accusations of "baseless targeting" against Indian officials in Canada. This diplomatic crisis intensified after Trudeau claimed credible allegations linking India to the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed outside a gurdwara in Canada in June 2023. India has dismissed these allegations as "absurd" and motivated, insisting that Canada is providing refuge to extremist elements.
