Last Defendant in Denver Fire That Killed 5 Senegalese Faces Potential 60-Year Sentence

The final defendant involved in a Denver house fire that tragically claimed the lives of five members of a Senegalese family could receive a 60-year prison term during his sentencing scheduled for Tuesday.

The incident, which occurred in 2020, resulted in the deaths of Hassan Diol, who worked at Amazon to support her family in Senegal, along with her husband Amadou Beye, who was awaiting a visa to join them in the United States. Their infant daughter, along with three other family members, perished in the fire, reportedly set in retaliation by a group of teenagers in a case of mistaken identity.

Kevin Bui, now 20, is seen by Amadou Beye as responsible for the tragic loss of five family members, including engineers and young children, during the blaze. Bui, described by prosecutors as the ringleader, pleaded guilty to reduced charges as part of a plea deal.

The devastating incident prompted community outcry and legal proceedings that involved multiple defendants. Bui's plea deal recommends a lengthy prison term, pending approval by Judge Karen L. Brody.

Despite the plea agreement, the victims' relatives view it not as justice served but as a step toward closure after enduring years of legal proceedings
