Seven Lost Lives, Many Injured in Kinshasa Concert Stampede

Congo, Brazzaville: On Saturday, a tragic stampede at a music concert in Kinshasa, the capital of Congo, resulted in the deaths of seven people and left many others injured, according to local officials.

The chaos occurred at the Stade des Martyrs stadium, which can hold up to 80,000 spectators. The concert featured renowned Congolese gospel singer Mike Kalambayi, as reported by Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba.

State television RTNC reported that seven fatalities resulted from the stampede, with some injured individuals requiring intensive care.

The cause of the stampede has not been officially confirmed, as an investigation is ongoing. However, the local music management company that organized the event attributed the chaos to security forces attempting to subdue troublemakers.

Approximately 30,000 people attended the concert, which also featured various musicians and pastors, according to Maajabu Gospel, the event's management company.

Footage from the scene, broadcast during the event, showed large crowds waiting outside the stadium in front of barricades, as well as people rushing towards the stage once inside.

Congo has experienced similar stampedes in recent years, often linked to inadequate crowd control measures, including excessive use of force. Last October, a similar incident at the same stadium during a music concert resulted in eleven deaths.
