Tories Slam Sadiq Khan Over Controversial New York Trip

The Conservatives have criticized Londons Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan for traveling to New York City during the Labour Party conference, arguing that he should be advocating for increased investment in London amid budget constraints for policing and housing. Khan, however, defended his trip, stating that it was crucial to bang the drum globally to attract foreign investment to the capital, especially as he gears up for re-election in May.

The London Assembly's Tory leader, Neil Garratt, accused Khan of fleeing the political gathering instead of addressing London's needs. He emphasized that Khan has blamed government funding for the citys issues while also acknowledging Labours stance that no additional cash would be provided. Despite these criticisms, Khan has historically used Labour conferences to highlight his achievements in London.

During his trip to New York, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly, Khan is set to participate in three conferences focused on climate change and business, and engage with US media about global issues. He emphasized the importance of in-person meetings to secure investment and tourism for London, countering suggestions that such discussions could be handled online. Additionally, he will explore urban development projects and initiatives related to environmental sustainability, aligning with his role as co-chair of the C40 group of cities addressing climate challenges.
