KP Sharma Oli on Nepals Balanced Relations with India and China

Nepal, Kathmandu: Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized on Monday that Nepal maintains a "balanced" relationship with both India and China, noting that occasional disputes between neighbors are "natural" and can be addressed through "open dialogue."

At a book release event, Oli stated, "We do not permit our territory to be used against any of our neighbors." He highlighted that Nepal's approach involves "honesty and neutrality" in its interactions with both countries.

Oli, a four-time prime minister aged 72, acknowledged that problems with neighbors are inevitable but can be resolved through constructive dialogue. He added, "Issues can be resolved if we seek just and appropriate solutions based on facts and evidence, adhering to international obligations without excessive elaboration."

In his remarks as the chief guest at the book release, Oli emphasized adherence to United Nations principles and the pursuit of neutral and peaceful solutions. He also suggested that blaming geopolitics should not be a cover for internal weaknesses.

Oli urged India to accept the Nepal-India Eminent Persons Group (EPG) report, which includes a review of the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty. He believes this acceptance would help facilitate dialogue to resolve border issues and other concerns.

Reflecting on his previous tenure, Oli recalled the signing of the Trade and Transit Treaty with China, which he considered a significant achievement. This agreement, known as the 2016 Transit and Transport Agreement (TTA), provided Nepal with access to Chinese sea and land ports for its international trade.
