Sacramento, California, USA: Indian-American cybersecurity professional Deepti Garg has officially announced her candidacy for the New Haven Unified School District Governing Board, contesting for the Area 5 Trustee seat in the Nov. 3 election.

Garg, who currently serves as Chair of the Union City Human Relations Commission, submitted her nomination papers on Aug. 3 for the open school board position.

In a statement, Garg said that every decision she makes would reflect the interests of students, families and the wider community.

"When I vote on school district decisions, I'll be voting for my own family, my neighbors and every student in our community," she said.

Highlighting the importance of strong public schools, Garg stated that quality education strengthens neighborhoods, supports student success, protects property values and ensures responsible use of taxpayer funds.

If elected, she plans to prioritize transparent public reporting on class sizes, provide regular updates on major district projects and strengthen safety measures across school campuses.

Garg moved to Union City with her family in 2012. Her two daughters attended James Logan High School, with one currently studying at the University of California, Berkeley, while the younger daughter is a senior at the school.

Professionally, Garg works as a cybersecurity program manager at a Fortune 500 company, where she oversees multimillion-dollar budgets. Before transitioning into the technology sector, she taught engineering students in India and later served as a substitute teacher in Bay Area schools for three years.

She joined the Union City Human Relations Commission in 2022 and has served as its chair since January 2026.
