Austin,Texas, USA: An Indian-origin student at the University of Texas at Austin was among two individuals killed in a mass shooting incident in Austin, Texas, early March 1, in what authorities are investigating as a possible act linked to escalating tensions surrounding the Iran conflict.
The victim, identified as 21-year-old Savitha Shan, was confirmed deceased on March 2. The shooting, which occurred outside a popular beer garden in Austin, also left 14 others injured.
According to officials, the alleged gunman, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, an immigrant from Senegal, was reportedly wearing clothing bearing the Iranian flag and religious inscriptions at the time of the attack. Authorities stated that preliminary findings indicate a potential “nexus to terrorism.”
Federal Bureau of Investigation Acting Special Agent Alex Doran confirmed that federal authorities are actively investigating possible terror links. The agency has placed law enforcement units across the United States on heightened alert following recent U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran.
UT Austin President Jim Davis expressed profound grief over Shan’s death, describing her as a promising student “preparing to change the world.” He noted that she was a dual-degree candidate in economics and management information systems and was expected to graduate this year.
Shan had been actively involved in community and professional initiatives, including volunteer work with the Austin Tamil Sangam and internships with PricewaterhouseCoopers and Staples. She had also founded an e-commerce venture.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that the suspect initially fired at patrons seated on the patio of a beer garden before exiting his vehicle and continuing the attack with a rifle. Police officers fatally shot the suspect at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack as the community mourns the loss of a young life described by peers and faculty as driven, compassionate, and full of promise.
