Indian-Origin Sindhu Srinivas Appointed Executive Director at UPenns Cedar Avenue Hospital to Advance Health Equity

Pennsylvania, USA: Sindhu Srinivas has been appointed as the new executive director of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s Cedar Avenue campus, where she will focus on enhancing health equity and community wellness in underserved neighborhoods of West Philadelphia.

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) Cedar Avenue public health campus has named Sindhu Srinivas as its executive director. Srinivas, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Perelman School of Medicine, will lead efforts to provide patient-centered care that aligns with the needs of the local community, according to a university statement.

“I am proud to take on the role of executive director at HUP Cedar Avenue, a campus that plays a vital role in improving health outcomes and wellness in the community,” said Srinivas. “It is an honor to work alongside PHMC, CHOP, and local residents to further the mission of this essential facility.”

A nationally recognized maternal-fetal medicine expert, Srinivas is known for co-developing the Heart Safe Motherhood program, which helped address racial disparities in postpartum care. For her contributions, she received the 2024 Edward S. Cooper Award from the American Heart Association.

Beyond her clinical achievements, Srinivas has a deep commitment to health equity and research on care delivery. She is the president-elect of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and has contributed to state and city committees focused on maternal mortality. Srinivas completed her medical training at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Cedar Avenue campus, located at 54th and Cedar, opened in 2021 as a result of a partnership between the Philadelphia Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) and Penn Medicine, with support from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Independence Blue Cross Foundation.

West Philadelphia, home to more than 200,000 residents, faces challenges such as high poverty and limited access to healthcare, which contribute to poorer health outcomes. HUP-Cedar Avenue seeks to address these challenges by providing a wide range of services, including primary care, emergency services, behavioral health, and substance use treatment, while focusing on social factors that impact health to promote equity.
