Quit: A Kuwait-based bank has accused over 1,400 individuals, mostly nurses from Kerala, of defaulting on loans totaling Rs 700 crore. These loans, taken during the Covid-19 period, were allegedly obtained by submitting salary certificates while working in Kuwait.
The defaulters reportedly left Kuwait under the pretense of visiting India but failed to return or repay. Complaints have been filed with the Kerala police, resulting in 10 FIRs across Ernakulam and Kottayam.
Legal representatives for the bank claim this is a case of "mass cheating," with loans ranging from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore per individual. Investigations are underway, and some defaulters have shown a willingness to repay.
The matter has been escalated to the Indian Home Department for further action, with more Middle Eastern banks potentially planning similar complaints.
