Twin Toddlers Discharged from Hospital After West Haven Drowning Attempt

After a hospital stay lasting over a week, two toddlers involved in an attempted drowning have been discharged, as confirmed by West Haven's mayor.

Romney Desronvil, 41, from New York, faces multiple charges, including attempted murder. His bond was set at $2 million by a judge, along with a mental health evaluation and protective orders for both children.

During a patrol, an officer discovered Desronvil's SUV parked on Dawson Avenue Beach at 2 a.m. on June 22, its headlights covered with clothes. Calling for backup, the officer heard cries coming from the water.

According to court records, Desronvil was found 30 to 40 feet offshore, holding both children, aged under 3 and unable to swim, under his arms.

As officers approached, Desronvil retreated deeper into the water, yelling at them to stay back and at one point saying "I love you" and "kill me." An officer observed Desronvil lowering his arms, causing the children to be submerged underwater for several minutes.

Officers managed to rescue the children, who were rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital for critical care.

Last week, the mayor reported that both children had been extubated and were showing significant improvement. On Tuesday, Mayor Borer confirmed their discharge from the hospital, with arrangements made for their return home.

"The children had two guardian angels that night in Officer Williamson and Officer Miller, along with the entire police and fire departments and dispatch team, who collectively saved their lives," stated West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer last week.

Mayor Borer added that the children's mother quickly arrived from New York.

First responders are being praised for their swift actions, with fire officials noting that the entire process, from the initial call to the hospital arrival, took just 22 minutes.
