US Voters See Poor Economy, Split on Who Can Fix It: AP-NORC

A recent AP-NORC poll reveals that Donald Trump has lost his previously held advantage over economic issues, a top concern for voters this election cycle. About 70% of registered voters describe the economy as poor, with many believing the nation is heading in the wrong direction. Although neither Trump nor Kamala Harris has a clear edge in managing the economy, Harris scores better on middle-class taxes and housing costs, with 46% of voters favoring her on taxes compared to 35% for Trump.

Voter sentiment is largely unfavorable toward both candidates, with 50% viewing Harris positively and 40% viewing Trump favorably. Harris enjoys strong support among Black voters, while Trump’s favorability remains stable despite his controversial actions. The poll indicates a gender divide, with more women favoring Harris compared to Trump.

Pessimism about the economy prevails, with half of voters describing it as poor. However, there are signs of improvement since last year when nearly 80% expressed dissatisfaction with the economy. Younger voters, who have historically supported Harris, are increasingly skeptical about her handling of economic issues.

On immigration, Trump retains a solid advantage, preferred by 45% of voters compared to Harris's 40%. Harris, however, leads in areas such as abortion, climate change, and election integrity. Foreign policy is another significant issue, with voters split on which candidate would better handle the situation in the Middle East.

The poll underscores the challenges both candidates face in securing voter confidence as they navigate critical economic and social issues ahead of the election.
