Buffalo, New York, USA: A new recognition has come the way of Dr. Saroj Chand, an Indian-origin researcher working in the field of electrical engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB).
Chand has been chosen as one of the first recipients of the Simons Empire Faculty Fellowship, a new initiative jointly supported by the State University of New York (SUNY) and the Simons Foundation.
The fellowship is intended to support promising researchers who are in the early stages of their academic careers. It focuses on strengthening research and faculty development in important areas of science, technology and engineering.
A total of 16 researchers have been selected for the inaugural fellowship. They represent SUNY’s four major university centers — Buffalo, Stony Brook, Albany and Binghamton.
Chand, who serves as an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University at Buffalo, is working on technologies related to quantum sensing. His research involves developing scalable quantum sensors that could help enhance the capabilities of quantum devices and aid the search for materials with potential applications in future technologies.
The new fellowship is also part of SUNY’s broader effort to expand research activity throughout its university system. The selected researchers are expected to continue developing work that can contribute to scientific progress and provide wider public benefits.
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., while announcing the fellowship, highlighted the role of the university’s researchers in advancing innovation, supporting economic development in New York and improving scientific understanding.
The inaugural fellows will conduct research across several fundamental disciplines, with the program supporting work in areas such as neuroscience, mathematics and physics, alongside other scientific and engineering fields.
Through the Simons Empire Faculty Fellows initiative, SUNY aims to build on the research strengths already established at its university centers while providing greater support to the next generation of academic researchers.
