About:

Sree Venkateswara is the God of Kali yuga. ‘Kalau Venkata Nayakah’ say the puranas. In fact for Krita yuga the designated god for the age was Narasimha, for Treta yuga it was Sree Rama, in Dwapara yuga it was Sree Krishna and for Kali yuga the God easily accessible is Sree Venkateswara.

Sree Venkateswara is a unique god endowed with abundant powers to drive away the evil effects of Kali. Sree Venkateswara means, Vem represents all the evils and sins and kata means that which dispels or drives away. Vem also represents all virtues and riches and kata is that which unites them. Therefore for those who pray Lord Venkateswara, their sins are washed away and they are endowed with virtues and wealth. When we look at the Vaishnava theology we don’t find mention of the name of Sree Venkateswara among the dasa avataras, the ten incarnations or in the twenty one incarnations mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana or the twelve, twenty four or thirty eight forms of Vishnu normally found in the Vaishnava tradition. That indicates the uniqueness and the exclusive nature of Sree Venkateswara. This mesmerizing and bewitching form of Vishnu is meant to rescue His devotees in the Kali Yuga.

As the Lord Himself mentions in His famous Bhagavad Gita, He takes an incarnation whenever there is threat to Dharma to resurrect and re establish it. Srinivasa or Sree Venkateswara comes down to the earth once again for the same purpose.Once upon a time when the sages wanted to offer a sacrifice, they wanted to know who among the trinity was superior. They sent Bhrugu who goes to Brahma and Siva first, finds them unfit for the offerings and finally goes to Vishnu and hurt by their negligence of his presence, kicks Him on the chest. Vishnu’s chest being the abode of Srimaha Lakshmi, She feels insulted, abandons Him and goes to the earth. After pacifying Brhugu’s anger and subliming his arrogance Vishnu too goes down to the earth as Srinivasa. This in brief is the story of the Lord of the Seven Hills.

In fact the seven hills represent symbolically the six enemies human beings are confronted from within, Kama desire, krodha anger, lobha greed, moha delusion, mada passion and matsarya jealousy. Those who cross these six insurmountable evils find the Lord on the seventh hill. The reason why we offer our hair to him is to symbolically surrender to him fully with no attachment even to the self.
